Innovation Report Proposal 4.22
To improve IPR awareness we will:
- Target SMEs to ensure they can use the IP systems effectively
- Improve the available evidence base on IP use and awareness as well as develop appropriate metrics to monitor and assess progress; and
- Target "innovators of the future", such as business studies, design and technology students and entrepreneurs, to raise awareness of IP. The first element is a revised version of the successful THINK kit ®, due to be launched by Spring 2004.
Context
Improving awareness of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) amongst businesses, particularly Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), means that they will be able to make informed decisions about their strategies for protecting their ideas. The same applies for students currently studying business and design related subjects, who are likely to be the innovators of the future.
Progress To Date
The Patent Office, in conjunction with IP professionals, has launched an awareness campaign, "What is the Key?"® http://www.the-key.biz, and continues its delivery of IP workshops at regional events, including the HM Customs & Excise-led Business Advice Open Days http://www.patent.gov.uk/media/events/index.htm The Patent Office has also completed a series of business adviser IP training days.
A mini survey, as part of the awareness campaign, has been completed to measure current levels of IP awareness amongst SMEs. A larger survey is intended and, as part of this process, a pilot survey is underway.
A revised version (Version 1.2) of the successful THINK kit® educational resource, was launched in Spring 2004. THINK kit® is now in over 70% of secondary schools. Version 2 of THINK kit®, which identifies the natural fit of IP with enterprise, has now been released and is being distributed http://www.patent.gov.uk/media/pressrelease/2005/1603.htm.
Next Steps
IP awareness events continue to be offered throughout the country. http://www.patent.gov.uk/media/events/index.htm
Once the pilot survey has been completed, a larger-scale survey on IP use and awareness will be conducted.
